Seasons of Sisterhood is a year long programme for a group of 10-12 year old girls with a curriculum designed and delivered by experienced teachers, Beth and Lotty. Key topics covered include puberty, menarche, healthy relationships and body image. The programme will provide a deep sense of belonging, and empower girls with essential knowledge and skills to thrive in our modern world.
Surveys and research in the last 5 years have shown a decline in the happiness and wellbeing of young people (see Girl Guiding UK annual surveys and 2022 Children’s Society report).
Girl Guiding UK asked over 2000 girls aged between 7-21 a series of questions as part of their annual survey in 2023 and found:
Girls aged 7-10 are experiencing the most rapid decline in their happiness.
Body image issues are impacting more girls in 2023 than before.
A 2022 report by the Children’s Society shows the children’s happiness continues to decline:
More children are unhappy with their appearance than with family, friends, school and schoolwork. Girls are more likely to feel this way than boys.
1 in 9 children have low wellbeing
The report reveals that more girls are unhappy with their appearance than boys.
Almost 1 in 5 (18%) – the equivalent of an estimated 411,000 - 10-15-year-old girls
are unhappy with their looks compared to 10% of boys
1 in 9 children said they did not cope with the changes caused by coronavirus
Seasons of Sisterhood has been developed to address some of these findings, and to support girls at a crucial time in their lives. The programme aims to:
Build sisterhood and a strong sense of community among girls aged 10-12, creating a safe and supportive environment where they can explore a wide range of topics and experience the joy of sisterhood.
Empower girls through comprehensive personal development, enhancing their self-esteem, confidence, self-worth, resilience, and coping skills. Girls will emerge confident and prepared, equipped with a toolbox of mental health strategies for a fulfilling and resilient life.
Inform and prepare girls for puberty, covering topics such as puberty and the menstrual cycle.
The programme consists of five face to face circles over the course of a year, along with monthly online calls. A huge range of topics are covered, such as puberty, friendships, body image and self esteem.
The programme has been developed in line with the seasons, with a key theme for each season. At the face to face circle, the theme is introduced, along with activities and discussion opportunities. Monthly online calls take place between face to face circles to provide coaching and discussion opportunities for the girls to reflect on their learning and experiences.
Opening circle - Aug 2025: The theme is ‘Self’ and the circle will focus on building trust and safety amongst the group and setting guidelines for the year ahead. Topics such as self-esteem and confidence are explored, with practical strategies shared.
Autumn circle - Oct 2025: The theme is ‘Others’ and the circle will focus on healthy relationships (including social media and digital devices) and friendships. Girls will have the opportunity to explore their values and beliefs, and consider ways that their inner narrative impacts them.
Winter circle - Jan 2026: The theme is ‘Change’ and the circle will focus on puberty and the physical and emotional changes that this can bring. This includes exploring the menstrual cycle and period products. Girls will feel empowered and supported to manage puberty effectively.
Spring circle - April 2026: The theme is ‘Community and Purpose’ and the circle will focus on values, community and purpose. Girls will have the opportunity to explore their own values and purpose, and consider the importance of community.
Closing circle - July 2026: This final circle provides the opportunity to close the circle, reflecting on all the skills and knowledge that have been learnt and developed, and consider ways to move forward in a positive and sustainable way. This transformational year culminates in this powerful closing circle, where caregivers are invited to attend to celebrate the progress made.
